Synthesis
General procedure for the synthesis of 2-(4-formyl-2-methoxyphenyl)acetamide from vanillin and chloroacetamide: In a solvent mixture of acetonitrile-DMF (20 mL, 8:2, v/v), chloroacetamide (0.010 mol), vanillin (0.011 mol), and potassium carbonate (2.00 g, 0.0145 mol) were sequentially added. The reaction mixture was heated and refluxed under stirring for 5-7 h. The progress of the reaction was monitored by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by evaporation, the residue was treated with an appropriate amount of water and the precipitated solid was collected by filtration. The resulting precipitate was washed with 30% aqueous methanol and subsequently dried in air. The yield of the product 2-(4-formyl-2-methoxyphenyl)acetamide and its physicochemical properties are listed in Table 9.
