What is the difference between adenosine and deoxyadenosine?
Adenosine and deoxyadenosine are both nucleosides containing the nitrogenous base adenine. The primary distinction between them lies in the structural presence of a ribose moiety in adenosine, whereas deoxyadenosine incorporates a deoxyribose moiety. Adenosine is one of the four nucleoside components of RNA, whereas deoxyadenosine is one of the four nucleoside components of DNA. The adenosine structure contains the nitrogenous base adenine and a ribose moiety, with no attached phosphate group. The molecule consists of adenine connected to the ribose moiety via a β-N-glycosidic bond. The deoxyadenosine structure incorporates a deoxyribose moiety. This differs from adenosine. In deoxyadenosine, the hydroxyl group at the 2' position of the sugar moiety is replaced by a hydrogen atom. This substitution transforms the ribose moiety into a deoxyribose moiety.
