What does Ginseng extract do for the Body?

Dec 27,2022
Ginseng is an antioxidant-rich herb. Research suggests it may have benefits for brain health, immune function, blood sugar control, and more. Ginseng has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.

This slow-growing, succulent-rooted dwarf plant comes in three varieties based on its age: fresh, white, or red.

Fresh ginseng was harvested 4 years ago, white ginseng was harvested 4-6 years ago, and red ginseng was harvested 6 years ago.

Ginseng extract contains two important compounds: ginsenosides and ginsenosides. These compounds complement each other to provide health benefits.

Safety and potential side effects of Ginseng extract

Ginseng extract is generally considered safe for nonpregnant healthy adults; however, at sufficient doses, ginseng extract may elevate blood pressure and cause insomnia, palpitations, nervousness, and tremor in susceptible individuals. These effects are increased if caffeine or other stimulants are taken concurrently. Both Panax and Siberian ginsengs should definitely be avoided in any patient with poorly controlled hypertension. Dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and nausea have also been reported. A controversial ginseng extract abuse syndrome consisting of tremor, elevated blood pressure, insomnia, and anxiety may also occur.

Diabetic patients have had hypoglycemia on ginseng, so sugars must be monitored, and insulin or other hypoglycemic medication dosages may have to be reduced. The use of ginseng with anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) and antiplatelet drugs is to be avoided because of the theoretical risk of increased bleeding. Also, coadministration of ginseng with digoxin and MAOIs should be avoided.
