What diseases can α-Lipoic Acid be used to treat?
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger, used as a food supplement and approved for various medicinal purposes, including the treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy, liver disease, and ROS-related diseases. Furthermore, alpha-lipoic acid has been reported to exert its anticancer effects through multiple mechanisms, including antioxidant properties, induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, synergistic effects with radiotherapy, and inhibition of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1-R) maturation. The antiproliferative IC50 value of alpha-lipoic acid is in the 3 μmol range. Exemestane combined with alpha-lipoic acid can exert a synergistic effect in the treatment of ER-positive breast cancer.
