Ornidazole is an antibiotic used to treat protozoan infections.A synthetic nitroimidazole, it is commercially obtained from an acid-catalyzed reaction between 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole and epichlorohydrin.
Uses
Ornidazole is used to treat amoebiasis, chlamydiosis, giardia infection, trichomonas infection, vaginal, urinary tract, intestinal and post-operative infections.It does not work against infections caused by the virus, including cold and flu.
Mechanism of Action
Ornidazole inhibits the growth of protozoa by interacting with the DNA of the micro-organism and inhibiting the protein synthesis, thereby leading to death of the micro-organism.
Dosage of Ornidazole
Overdose
Overdose of this medicine leads to confusion, dizziness, impairment of consciousness, fits/convulsions, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
Missed a Dose
If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.
Side effects
In some cases, ornidazole may cause common side-effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, and taste disturbances.
