Is Methyl eugenol an insecticide?
Methyl eugenol (ME) is not an insecticide. ME has no insecticidal activity of its own, but it is a good insect bait in order to attract certain fruit flies, such as the
oriental fruit fly, Hawaiian fruit fly. It is often used in combination with other insecticides or in insect traps and lure products. ME will be incorporated into traps for control of fruit flies. In a "lure-and-kill" study using Methyl eugenol (ME) and neonicotinoid insecticides on Drosophila orientalis (Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel)), it was found that the attractiveness of ME alone and ME with nalidixa or neonicotinoids added were similar in a field experiment , suggesting that the addition of these insecticides to ME in traps does not produce repellent effects on multicidal rodent males.
