Diacetone acrylamide:Reactivity,Uses,Toxicity
Diacetone Acrylamide (DAAM) is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 57°C. It is an acrylic type monomer, used as a crosslinking monomer to make functional copolymers.
Diacetone Acrylamide Characteristics
Diacetone Acrylamide crosslinking system provides long-term emulsion stability (“in-can” stability) and enhances film properties, such as erasability resistance, stain resistance, moisture resistance, solvent resistance, adhesion, block resistance, weather resistance, and tack-free time. Additionally, it readily polymerizes with a wide variety of co-monomers to form copolymers.
Diacetone Acrylamide Reactivity
Diacetone acrylamide forms polymers in solution, in bulk, or in emulsion. May react vigorously with strong oxidizing agents. Can react exothermically with reducing agents (such as alkali metals and hydrides) to release gaseous hydrogen. May react exothermically with both acids and bases. May undergo autoxidation upon exposure to the air to form explosive peroxides.
Diacetone Acrylamide Uses
Diacetone acrylamide has been used as an intermediate in the production of polyvinyl acetate. It can also be used as an additive to rubber, plastics, and other materials. The thermal expansion coefficient of diacetone acrylamide is similar to that of polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene, making it a useful material for constructing models of those substances.
Diacetone Acrylamide Toxicity
Acute/chronic hazards: Toxic. Irritant. Flammable. Hazardous decomposition products. (NTP, 1992)
