Crystal Structure of Titanium oxide (Ti3O5)
Titanium oxide (Ti3O5) is a metal oxide that is used in a wide range of applications such as optical lens coatings, semiconductor devices and solar cells. Titanium oxide can be prepared by laser ablation or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It is also a pigment, commonly found in paints, plastics and paper.
Ti₃O₅ crystallises in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group.Ti³⁺ bonds with six O² atoms to form a mixture of twisted edges and co-angled TiO₆ octahedra. The tilting angles of the split-angle octahedra range from 31-54°. Ti⁴⁺ bonds with six O² atoms in a 6-coordinate geometry. the distances of the Ti-O bonding range from 1.93 to 2.16 Å. At the first O²- site, the O²- bonds are formed with two equivalent Ti³⁺ atoms and two equivalent Ti³⁺ atoms. Ti⁴⁺ atoms, forming a mixture of twisted edges and co-angled OTi₄ trigonal pyramids. At the second O²- site, O²- is bonded to one Ti⁴⁺ atom and two equivalent Ti³⁺ atoms in a twisted T-shaped geometry. At the third O²- site, O²- is bonded to a Ti⁴⁺ atom and three equivalent Ti³⁺ atoms to form a hybrid twisted edge-shared OTi₄ trigonal pyramid.
