Tat-beclin 1 is a peptide derived from the autophagic protein region (beclin 1), which is an effective inducer of autophagy. The sequence contains 31 amino acids, and has a physiological function of penetrating the membrane. It interacts with the negative regulator of autophagy, GAPR-1 (GLIPR2). Tat-beclin 1 reduces the accumulation of polyglutamine amplified protein aggregates and the replication of various pathogens, including HIV-1, in vitro, and reduces the mortality of mice infected with Chikungunya disease (CHIKV) or West Nile virus (WNV).
