植物源胆固醇是一种胆甾醇，由在5,6-位具有双键的胆甾烷以及3β-羟基组成。

最广泛应用的LNP组成成分：聚乙二醇脂质、胆固醇、合成磷脂、可电离阳离子脂质、mRNA。目前上市的mRNA疫苗成分主要有以下5种：

1）mRNA；

2）阳离子脂质，与带负电的mRNA结合，LNP最关键的成分；

3）胆固醇，介导LNP内吞，以及稳定LNP结构（胆固醇有助于增加细胞膜的流动性或硬度，加入胆固醇能提高纳米颗粒的稳定性）

胆固醇有利于确保LNP的双层结构及脂质的流动性。中性脂质（如各种磷脂）也是用于构建LNP双层结构的，因为阳离子脂质体的双层结构并不稳定

4）磷脂酰胆碱，辅助型脂质，可以在内吞时加快mRNA的释放；

5）聚乙二醇化磷脂，延长代谢时间，提高LNP稳定性。

未来任何药企想开发任何类型的mRNA疫苗，可以不用其他东西，但必须要用到植物源胆固醇。
