S-adenosyl methionine (also known as S-adenosyl methionine, SAM), with an activated methyl group (marked on the right), is a coenzyme involved in the methyl-transfer reaction and is present in all eukaryotic cells. After losing this activated methyl group, SAM becomes S-adenosine-L-homocysteine (SAH). S-adenosylmethionine was first discovered by Cantoni in 1952. It is synthesized from ATP and Methionine in the cell by Methionine Adenosyl Transferase, and loses one methyl group to S-adenylyl homocysteine when it participates in the methyl-transfer reaction as a coenzyme. Most S-adenosylmethionine is produced in the liver. In higher organisms, more than 40 anabolic or catabolic chemical reactions involve the transfer of methyl groups of S-adenosylmethionine to substrates such as nucleic acids, proteins and fats.

Use
Adenosylmethionine can effectively treat depression, arthritis, chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis caused by intrahepatic cholestasis and other symptoms, while it can prevent liver cancer, can promote the formation of cartilage tissue and injury healing, slow the chemical drugs, alcohol and cancer chemotherapy damage to the liver. And has the function of regulating the nervous central system. It has anti-inflammatory, pain relief and tissue repair functions, and has significant effects on joint diseases, and significantly promotes chondrogenesis and reduces joint pain, stiffness and swelling. Compared with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, it neither inhibits prostaglandin synthesis nor operates the gastrointestinal tract.
The S-Adenosyl-L-methionine, with the CAS registry number 29908-03-0,is also known as (3S)-5'-[(3-Amino-3-carboxylatopropyl)methylsulphonio]-5'-deoxyadenosine; SAM. It belongs to the product categories of Nutritional Supplements. Its EINECS number is 249-946-8. This chemical's molecular formula is C15H22N6O5S and molecular weight is 398.44. What's more,Its systematic name is S-Adenosyl-L-methionine.Physiologic methyl radical donor involved in enzymatic transmethylation reactions and present in all living organisms. It possesses anti-inflammatory activity and has been used in treatment of chronic liver disease. Some research has indicated that taking S-Adenosylmethionine (CAS NO.29908-03-0) on a regular basis may help fight depression, liver disease, and the pain of osteoarthritis. Multiple clinical trials indicate benefits for depression, some liver conditions and osteoarthritis. All other indications are not yet proven. Therapeutic use of S-Adenosylmethionine has increased as dietary supplements have gained in popularity.
