Gouteng alkaloid is an indole derivative extracted and isolated from the stems, branches, and hooks of Gouteng, a plant in the Rubiaceae family. It is soluble in ethanol, chloroform, and acetone, slightly soluble in ether, and almost insoluble in petroleum ether. Gouteng alkaloid has the typical chemical properties of alkaloids and can react with general alkaloid reagents. When exposed to concentrated potassium dichromate sulfuric acid test solution, it appears orange and gradually turns yellow green.
