P-toluenesulfonic acid is widely used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, stabilizers for polymerization reactions, catalysts for organic synthesis (esters, etc.), intermediates for coatings and resin curing agents. It is a common acid catalyst for organic synthesis. It can be neutralized with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium p-toluenesulfonate, and then with the action of phosphorus pentachloride, p-toluenesulfonyl chloride can be produced. The latter is used in the nucleophilic substitution reaction, also used as the protective base of alcohol hydroxyl group. The use of p-toluenesulfonic acid also catalyzes the dihydrofuran protecting group on alcohols, carboxylic acid esterification, ester exchange reaction, and makes aldehydes to generate acetal and so on.
