Octocrylene is an organic compound used in sunscreens and color cosmetics,
an oil-soluble UV absorber with water-insoluble properties.
Properties that contribute to the solubility of other oil-soluble solid sunscreens.
It has the advantages of high absorption rate, non-toxicity, non-teratogenicity,
good stability to light and heat. Oaklein belongs to the cinnamic acid class of ultraviolet absorbers,
the maximum absorption wavelength of ultraviolet light is 308nm, and it has a strong absorption capacity for ultraviolet light (UVB) with wavelengths in the range of 280-320nm.
Oaklein can absorb UV-B and a small amount of UV-A, and has a stabilizing effect on the UVA sunscreen avobenzone (Paso 1789), which is a class I sunscreen approved by the FDA and has a high usage rate in the
United States and Europe. The maximum permitted additive amount of Oaklein in China,
the EU, Japan, the U.S., and South Korea is 10% (calculated as a mass fraction).
However, in daily sunscreen products, the added amount is usually 1-3%, and few products add up to 10%. Octocrylene is used as UV-A and UV-B filters in sunscreen and topical pharmaceutical preparations,
and can also be used as UV absorbers in plastics, paints and dyes.
