N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine

N-acetyl-D-glucosamine is the basic unit of many important polysaccharides in biological cells, especially the exoskeleton of crustaceans has the highest content. It is an important precursor for the synthesis of bifidogenic factors, and has many important physiological functions in living organisms.

A derivatized glucose monomer found in polymers of bacterial cell walls, chitin, hyaluronic acid, and various glycans. D-GlcNAc was used to identify, differentiate and characterize N-acetyl-β-D-hexylaminoase.
