Mupirocin (also known as pseudomonosporic acid A) is an ideal anti-bacterial preparation for the skin surface, which was introduced to the market by GlaxoSmithKline in 1985 under the trade name Bactroban. The United States FDA approved the drug for use in the United States in 1987, and China approved the production and sale of the drug by SmithKline Pharmaceutical in 1993. Mupirocin is mainly used for the prevention and treatment of skin bacterial infections caused by gram-positive bacteria.
