Overview:
Lithium carbonate (molecular structure formula Li2CO3, English lithiumcarbonate) is a colorless monoclinic crystal or white powder. Density 2.11. Melting point 618℃. Non-deliquescent, stable in air. The solubility in water is very small, and the solubility decreases with the increase of temperature. The solubility in cold water is greater than that in hot water. Soluble in dilute acid, insoluble in ethanol and acetone. When carbon dioxide is passed into the water suspension of lithium carbonate, lithium carbonate is transformed into acid lithium carbonate and dissolved. If the acid lithium carbonate solution is heated again, carbon dioxide is released and lithium carbonate is precipitated. This property of lithium carbonate can be used to remove impurities from it. Due to the strong polarization of lithium ions, the thermal stability of lithium carbonate is worse than that of other alkali metal carbonates, and when heated above the melting point, it will decompose, producing lithium oxide and carbon dioxide. Lithium carbonate industry is a global highly monopolistic industry, the current production capacity is mainly concentrated in the hands of SQM, FMC, Chemetall and other three foreign manufacturers. Lithium carbonate is used in the manufacture of other lithium salts, such as lithium chloride and lithium bromide. It is also used as a raw material for lithium oxide in enamel, glass, ceramics and enamel, and is also added to electrolytic cells for electrolytic aluminum production to increase the current efficiency and reduce the internal resistance and temperature of the electrolytic cell. In medicine is mainly used to treat mania, schizophrenia can improve its emotional disorders. It has the effect of elevating peripheral leukocyte.
Preparation:
The method of purifying battery grade lithium carbonate from industrial grade lithium carbonate is as follows:
Weigh 20g of industrial grade Li2CO3, pour it into a 600ml beaker, add 200ml of deionized water, and stir continuously to form a uniform Li2CO3 slurry. Take 20ml of formic acid and pour it into the separating funnel, adjust the formic acid to add it into the Li2CO3 slurry with constant and uniform stirring speed, and get a soluble clarified solution. Weigh 20g urea, dissolve it in 50ml deionized water, pour it into the above clarified solution, put the mixed liquid into a water bath, adjust the temperature to 80℃, weigh 5g lithium hydroxide and dissolve it in 80ml deionized water, add it into the mixture with an eyedrover to adjust the pH of the mixed liquid to about 10, stir continuously, react for 5h, remove and filter to get white precipitate. After repeated cleaning and filtration with deionized water for 4 times, a solid was obtained and baked in a 100℃ oven for 35 hours to obtain white powdered lithium carbonate products.
