Imatinib is an oral drug used to treat the acute, accelerated, and chronic phases of Philadelphia chromosome (Ber-Abl) -positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in adult patients. CML is a hematopoietic stem cell disease caused by DNA abnormalities in stem cells in the bone marrow. Abnormal DNA produces abnormal proteins that interfere with the normal production of white blood cells in the bone marrow, eventually leading to a sharp increase in the number of white blood cells. CML can be divided into chronic stage, accelerated stage and critical stage, and the average survival of patients in critical stage is only 2-3 months. Imatinib is also effective in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, with an effective rate of about 50%.
