Empagliflozin by boehringer ingelheim and eli lilly company joint development of a type 2 sodium glucose transporters together (SGLT - 2, sodium - dependentglucosecotransporter2) inhibitors. SGLT-2 inhibitor is a new type of hypoglycemic agent. It reduces the reabsorption of glucose by the kidney and increases the excretion of glucose in urine by inhibiting the expression of SGLT-2, thus reducing the plasma glucose level.

Application

Empagliflozin is used for the treatment of adult patients with 2 diabetes who have not achieved sufficient blood sugar control in combination with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control. It should not be used to treat patients with type 1 diabetes, patients with elevated blood or urine ketones (diabetic ketoacidosis), patients with severe kidney damage, end-stage kidney disease, and dialysis patients.
