Dimethyl carbonate DMC CAS 616-38-6 is an organic compound with the formula OC(OCH3)2. It is a colourless, flammable liquid. It is classified as a carbonate ester. This compound has found use as a methylating agent and more recently as a solvent. Dimethyl carbonate is often considered to be a green reagent. At any proporion, it can be mixed with such organic solvents as alcohol, ketone, ester, etc., but it is slightly soluble in water.

Applications
1) It is a perfect methylating agent, carbonylating agent, methoxylating agent and methylolating agent with active chemical properties. It can be used into produce polypropylene carbonate.
2) In pharmaceutical and pesticide, DMC can be used into produce ciprofloxacin and carbadox. Also it is a indispensable raw material to produce lithium battery electrolyte. Because of its excellent chemical and environmental property, recently DMC is acting as a good solvent for coating, paints, ink and adhesive substituting the benzene, xylene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, acetone, butanone, toluene. It is an ideal substitute for toxic substances such as phosgene, dimethyl sulphate, and methyl chloraformate.
3) Dimethyl carbonate (DMC), is a kind of important intermediates organic synthesis, molecular structure contains carboyl ethyl and armour, such as oxygen functional group, has a variety of reaction performance in the production safety, convenient, have use less pollution, easy to transport all those characteristics.
4) Dimethyl carbonate can be used in producing Lithium battery electrolyte , developing liquid.

Safety & Transportation
DMC is a flammable liquid that has a flash point of 17 °C (63 °F), which would limit its use in consumer and indoor applications. DMC is still safer than acetone, methyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone from a flammability point of view. DMC has a recommended industrial exposure (REL) limit of 100 ppm by inhalation over an 8 hour work day, which is similar to a number of common industrial solvents (toluene, methyl ethyl ketone). Workers should wear protective organic vapor respirators when using DMC indoors or in other conditions where concentrations exceed the REL. DMC is metabolized by the body to methanol and carbon dioxide, so accidental ingestion should be treated in the same manner as methanol poisoning.
