Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is an organic compound that can be considered as a dimethyl ester of carbonic acid.It is a flammable, clear liquid with a boiling point of 90°C, insoluble in water, and can be used as a methylating reagent.Dimethyl carbonate is less toxic and biodegradable than other methylation agents, such as methane-iodide and dimethyl sulfate.In the past, dimethyl carbonate was prepared from phosgene by catalytic oxidation and carbonylation of methanol in the presence of oxygen, which was more environmentally friendly than the previous method.Dimethyl carbonate can methylate aniline, phenol and carboxylic acid, but many reactions require high pressure.DBU can be added to reflux DMC to catalyze the reaction of dimethyl carbonate methylated carboxylic acid.
