| Name | Diloxanide furoate |
| Description | Diloxanide furoate (Dichlofurazol) is an antiprotozoal compound with oral activity that can be used in the study of amoebas in tissues and several other protozoal infections. |
| In vitro | Diloxanide furoate showed significant activity against different strains of Tissue Lysing Ameba in the concentration range of 1.95 to 2.5 μg/ml. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 2.5 μg/ml, 2.5 μg/ml and 1.95 μg/ml for BYso strain co-cultivated with bacteria, SFL3 strain co-cultivated with Trypanosoma cruzi and SFL3 strain cultured aseptically. [1] |
| In vivo | Diloxanide furoate administered orally at doses ranging from 75-200 mg/kg once daily for 3 consecutive days showed efficacy in weanling pups at different doses. Administered at a dose of 200 mg/kg, 100% of the subject rats were cured and no amebic lesions were observed in the cecum. In addition, the cure rate was 85%, 77% and 44.4% when administered at doses of 150 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 75 mg/kg, respectively. The half effective dose (ED50) of the drug in rats was 77.9 mg/kg.
