Cobaltous chloride, often called cobalt chloride, cobalt dichloride or cobalt chloride (Ⅱ), chemical formula CoCl2; The anhydrous cobaltous chloride is blue with numerous hydrates, and the common one is the red-purple hexahydrate CoCl2·6H2O. Anhydrous matter is hygroscopic, hydrate is deliquable. In the solid hexahydrate, four water molecules are coordination water and two water molecules are crystal water, that is, [CoCl2(H2O)4]·2H2O. Aqueous substance dissolves in water and ethanol. In the European Union's "On the Registration, Evaluation, Licensing and Restriction of Chemicals Act" (REACH), cobaltous chloride has been listed as a substance of high concern (SVHC).

Production method
1. Use sulfoxide chloride to react with cobalt chloride hexahydrate. Put 20g finely ground CoCl2·6H2O into a round-bottomed flask, add 50mL of newly distilled sulfoxide chloride at room temperature, and immediately release SO2 and HCl. After foaming ceased, install a reflux condensing tube on the flask, reflux the mixture for 1-2h, and then convert the reflux tube into a distillation unit, and blow it into dry under reduced pressure The dry nitrogen distill out the excess sulfoxide chloride. Immediately transfer the flask containing the product to a vacuum dryer filled with potassium hydroxide and store it for at least 12h to remove residual sulfoxide chloride. Finally, the product is transferred to a suitable container in a dry handling box and sealed.
Use
Cobalt chloride is mainly used as feed nutrition enhancer. In industry: the main use is to make cobalt oxide and metal cobalt alloy material of electronic materials, a small amount of used in the production of barometers, hydrometers, invisible ink and so on. Cobalt chloride test paper is blue when dry and changes to pink when wet. Silica gel added a certain amount of cobalt chloride, can indicate the degree of moisture absorption of silica gel, often used in dry memory. Used as glass and ceramic colorant, electroplating, paint drier, ammonia absorption, etc. Manufacture cobalt catalyst, manufacture color-changing silica gel dry and wet indicator. Make invisible ink. In medicine: stimulates bone marrow to promote red blood cell production. For aplastic anemia, renal anemia. Oral: 20-40mg each time, 3 times a day, after meals, can be used for 3-4 months; Children are given 2 to 4mg/kg daily, divided into 3 times. [Preparation] Tablets (enteric-coated tablets) or capsules: 20mg, 40mg each; Solution: 0.3%. It can cause anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the precardiac area, redness of the face and limbs, rash, temporary neurological deafness, kidney damage, abdominal pain, and occasionally cause pigmentation, goiter, rapid heart rate and other reactions. Large dose can inhibit the formation of red blood cells. (Contrainidated in patients with congestive heart failure and pernicious anemia).
