Description:
Semaglutide
is a medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It
belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor
agonists, often abbreviated as GLP-1 receptor agonists. These drugs work
by mimicking the effects of the hormone GLP-1, which is naturally
produced in the body in response to food intake. GLP-1 helps regulate
blood sugar levels by stimulating secretion, reducing glucagon
production (a hormone that raises blood sugar), slowing down stomach
emptying, and promoting a feeling of fullness.
Function:
Improved
Glycemic Control: Semaglutide helps lower blood sugar levels by
increasing secretion and decreasing the release of glucagon, leading to
better control of blood glucose.
Weight Loss: Semaglutide is
associated with weight loss, which can be beneficial for individuals
with type 2 diabetes who are overweight or obese. The exact mechanism
behind this weight loss is not fully understood but is thought to
involve a combination of reduced appetite and slowed stomach emptying.
Cardiovascular
Benefits: Some GLP-1 receptor agonists, including semaglutide, have
demonstrated cardiovascular benefits by reducing the risk of major
cardiovascular events in people with type 2 diabetes who are at high
risk for heart disease.
Potential Renal Benefits: There is
ongoing research to explore whether semaglutide and other GLP-1 receptor
agonists might offer benefits for kidney health in people with type 2
diabetes and kidney complications.
