Statin targeting peptide 1 (also known as Prohibitin-TP01 and TP01; Adipotide is a peptide analogue with the sequence CKGGRAKDC-GG-D (KLAKLAK) 2. The mechanism of action is to target specific blood vessels that supply blood to adipose tissue, causing the blood vessels to constrict and causing the fat cells fed by these vessels to undergo apoptosis. Adipotide is designed to bind to two receptors, ANXA2 (membrane mucin A2) and Suppressor protein, which are specific to the blood vessels that supply white adipose tissue.
Adipotide kills fat cells by targeting their blood supply, plain and simple. Interestingly, this peptide is able to distinguish blood vessels in fat cells from blood vessels elsewhere in the body, making it highly selective. It can also enhance insulin sensitivity, which has a positive effect on type 2 diabetes.
