**Definition:**  

Eplerenone is a synthetic steroidal compound classified as a selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA). It is designed to block the effects of aldosterone, a hormone involved in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance.

**Functions:**  

Eplerenone works by selectively inhibiting the binding of aldosterone to its receptor, reducing sodium retention and fluid buildup. This helps lower blood pressure, decrease cardiac strain, and prevent fibrosis in heart and kidney tissues. Its selectivity minimizes side effects compared to non-selective MRAs.

**Applications:**  

1. **Hypertension:** Used to manage high blood pressure, particularly in patients with resistant hypertension.
