Phthalic acid is an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, with formula C6H4(CO2H)2. It is an isomer of isophthalic acid and terephthalic acid. Although phthalic acid is of modest commercial importance, the closely related derivative phthalic anhydride is a commodity chemical produced on a large scale.
Properties: Colorless monoclinic crystal. Loss of water into the molecular anhydride - phthalic anhydride, commonly known as phthalic anhydride.Solubility: soluble in methanol and ethanol, slightly soluble in water and ether, insoluble in chloroform, benzene and petroleum ether. At 213 C it is resolved into water and phthalic anhydride. It is found in burley tobacco, spice tobacco and flue gas.
Application: Used for making dyestuff, polyester resin, polyester, medicine and plasticizer. Phthalic anhydride can be substituted for phthalic acid in applications. Phthalic acid is a raw material for the synthesis of resins, fibers, medicines, etc. It is an important organic industrial product. As a reference material for gas chromatography and an analytical reagent for some metals.
Phthalic acid dehydration after the formation of phthalic anhydride, phthalic anhydride is an important raw material for polyurethane industry, its products in the production of polyurethane insulation materials, performance than polyether better.
