Fumaric acid or trans-butenedioic acid is the chemical compound with the formula HO2CCH=CHCO2H. This white crystalline compound is one of two isomeric unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, the other being maleic acid. In fumaric acid the carboxylic acid groups are trans (E) and in maleic acid they are cis (Z). Fumaric acid has a fruit-like taste. The salts and esters are known as fumarates.
Application
Fumaric acid is used in the production of unsaturated polyester resins, which are characterized by good chemical resistance and heat resistance. The copolymer of fumaric acid and ethylene acetate is a good adhesive. The copolymer of fumaric acid and styrene is the raw material for making fiberglass. The plasticizer made by fumaric acid is non-toxic and can be used for vinyl acetate latex in contact with food. The goods is the pharmaceutical intermediates and fine chemicals such as bleaches, in the pharmaceutical industry is used in the production of the antidote 2 thiol succinic acid, fumaric acid with sodium carbonate neutralization, which get the butene sodium ([17013-01-3]), then using ferrous sulfate replacement for fumaric acid, iron type is used in the treatment of small red blood cell anemia drugs rich blood iron. As a kind of food additive -- sour taste agent, used in cool drink, fruit sugar, jelly, ice cream, etc., mostly used with acid taste agent citric acid, single sodium salt made by reaction of fumaric acid and sodium hydroxide, also used as sour flavoring, also used as intermediate of synthetic resin and mordant.
