2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, also known as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, is a hormone herbicide that has a toxic effect at high concentrations. It promotes the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins in weed stem tissues, restores the ability of mature cells to divide, and promotes cell division, causing abnormal growth and leading to weed death. The symptoms of weed poisoning are similar to those of auxin substances, and it is widely used in the fields of rice, corn, wheat, barley, oats, forage, sorghum, sugarcane and other cereal crops to prevent and control one year and perennial broad-leaved weeds, sedges, and certain malignant weeds. It is ineffective against cereal weeds. Structurally, it belongs to the class of phenoxycarboxylic acid herbicides and is the most active compound in this class, with a 100 fold increase in activity compared to similar plant growth regulators, such as halobutyric acid.
