Finasteride description:
Finasteride, a 5-α reductase inhibitor, is widely used in the medical management of male pattern baldness and has been reported to cause sexual side effects. This paper critically reviews the available evidence and makes recommendations on how doctors should advise patients when prescribing drugs.
Finasteride for use
Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH often have difficulty urinating, a reduced volume of urine, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and the need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride makes these symptoms less severe and reduces the chance of needing prostate surgery. It can be used alone or in combination with other drugs such as alpha-blockers (doxazosin, Cardura) to treat BPH. In men with hair loss, finasteride increases the amount of scalp hair, but not body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-α -reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone into another hormone, which causes men to have prostate growth or hair loss. It increases testosterone levels in the body, which reduces the size of the prostate and increases hair growth on the scalp. Finasteride's effects on the prostate and scalp last only as long as the drug is taken. When it stops, the prostate begins to grow again and hair falls out.
Do not use finasteride if:
You are allergic to any ingredient of finasteride
You are pregnant or may be pregnant
If any of these apply to you, contact your doctor or healthcare provider immediately.
How to use finasteride
Use finasteride as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the drug for accurate dosage instructions.
An additional patient flyer can be used for finasteride. If you have questions about this information, consult your pharmacist.
Oral finasteride with or without food.
Continue to take finasteride even if you feel well. Don't miss a dose.
Taking finasteride at the same time every day will help you remember to take it.
If you miss a dose of finasteride, please skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Don't take 2 doses at once.
What is the effect of finasteride
Finasteride has a limited but effective effect. To get results from taking finasteride, you will have to be patient, as the first results may come soon, for example, two years after starting use. Finasteride treatment begins to decline after five years, and eventually its beneficial effects are reversed, hair loss persists and the product is no longer effective.
