(S)-(+)-Ketoprofen is the biologically active enantiomer of the common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) Ketoprofen. Like other NSAIDs, it works primarily by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are involved in producing prostaglandins that cause inflammation, pain, and fever.
The “(S)-(+)” designation indicates its specific three-dimensional chiral structure—this version is responsible for most of the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. The opposite enantiomer, (R)-(-)-Ketoprofen, is largely inactive as a COX inhibitor but may contribute to other effects or be converted in vivo.
(S)-(+)-Ketoprofen is often studied and used in purified form to enhance potency and reduce dosage compared to the racemic mixture (which contains both enantiomers). It is available in some markets as a single-enantiomer drug under names such as Dexketoprofen, offering faster onset and potentially improved side-effect profiles.
