Tetracycline hydrochloride is the hydrochloride form of the tetracycline. Tetracycline is a kind of broad-spectrum polyketide antibiotics produced by the Streptomyces genus of antinobacteria. It is a kind of bacteriostatic antibiotics which inhibits the bacteria growth through binding to the 30 S ribosomal subunit, blocking the aminoacyl tRNA from binding to the translating ribosome, thus interfering with the protein synthesis process. Because of the problem of drug resistance, tetracycline is not a frequent choice for treating bacterial infections. However, it is still used for the treatment of infections caused by chlamydia, Rickettsia and Spirochetal.
