Mecoprop-trolamine is produced through the same neutralisation-based industrial pathway used for other amine salt forms of phenoxy herbicides, but tailored to the bulky triethanolamine (trolamine) counter ion. Production begins with synthesis and purification of racemic mecoprop acid via the standard phenoxypropionate route. The purified acid is then dissolved or slurried in water and reacted with trolamine under controlled pH and temperature, ensuring full salt formation while preventing unwanted esterification between the acid and the triethanolamine’s hydroxyl groups. Once the neutralisation reaches the desired stoichiometry, the resulting aqueous mecoprop-trolamine solution is filtered to remove any insoluble residues, adjusted for active-ingredient concentration, and standardized for pH, viscosity, and density.
