Fenridazon-propyl was produced through a straightforward heterocycle-plus-aryl coupling route typical of early pyridazinone herbicides. Industrial processes began with construction of the pyridazinone core from inexpensive dihydrazine-dicarbonyl precursors using robust condensation chemistry. Once the heterocycle was in hand, manufacturers introduced the aryl side chain, including the propyl ester functionality, via controlled acylation or nucleophilic substitution steps designed to give clean conversion and minimise rearrangements. Final purification yielded a stable technical grade active suitable for formulation.
