NMI is a protein with multiple biochemical functions and encodes a protein that interacts with NMYC and CMYC (two members of the Myc family of oncogenes), as well as other transcription factors containing the Zip, HLH, or HLH-Zip motifs. NMI proteins also interact with all STATs except STAT2 and enhance STAT-mediated transcription in response to the cytokines IL2 and IFN-γ. NMI mRNA is expressed at low levels in all human fetal and adult tissues tested, except brain. The cytokines IL2 and IFN-γ. NMI mRNA is expressed at low levels in all human fetal and adult tissues tested except brain, and at high levels in the cancer cell line myeloid leukaemia.
