Buthiobate is a largely obsolete fungicide. It has a low aqueous solubility and is non-volatile. Environmental fate and ecotoxicity data is scant. It is not highly toxic to mammals ig ingested.
Buthiobate is a fungicide with cytogenetic activity.
ChEBI: Buthiobate is an alkylbenzene.
Buthiobate is produced commercially through a multi step synthesis typical of phosphorothioate compounds. The process begins with the preparation of the diethyl phosphorothioate backbone, usually by reacting phosphorus trichloride with ethanol and sulfurising agents. This intermediate is then coupled with a substituted benzylthio moiety under controlled conditions to yield the active buthiobate molecule. The crude product is purified by distillation or solvent extraction.
