Mecoprop-P-potassium is produced through a neutralisation-based industrial process designed to preserve the optical purity of the (R)-mecoprop-P acid while converting it into a highly water-soluble potassium salt. Production begins with preparation and purification of enantiomerically enriched mecoprop-P acid, obtained either by asymmetric synthesis or by resolving racemic mecoprop. The chiral acid is then dissolved or slurried in water and treated with potassium hydroxide under controlled pH and temperature, ensuring complete salt formation without racemisation or unwanted side reactions. Once neutralisation reaches the required stoichiometry, the resulting aqueous mecoprop-P-potassium solution is filtered to remove any insoluble residues, adjusted for active-ingredient concentration, and standardised for pH and density.
