Benzothiazole-2-carbaldehyde oxime (1.78 g, 10 mmol) was mixed with zinc powder (0.98 g, 15 mmol) and ammonium formate (1.26 g, 20 mmol) in 100 mL of methanol in a round bottom flask. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 2 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phases were combined, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and purified by column chromatography to afford 1,3-benzothiazole-2-methylamine as solid powder in 93% yield.
