tert-Butyl chromate is a highly flammable, clear, colorless, hygroscopic, corrosive, flammable liquid orred crystals from petroleum ether. Solution in carbon tetrachloride is highly flammable. Molecular weight = 230.3;Freezing/Melting point = 25 to 0℃; 22.8℃. HazardIdentification (based on NFPA-704 M Rating System):Health 4, Flammability 1, Reactivity 1, (Oxidizer).[NJDHSS]Soluble in water (hydrolyzed).
tert-Butyl chromate is a highly flammable,
clear, colorless, hygroscopic, corrosive, flammable liquid
or red crystals from petroleum ether. Solution in carbon tetrachloride is highly flammable.
In specialty reactions as a source of Cr;
manufacture of catalysts; polymerization of
olefins; curing agent for urethane resins
Highly flammable. Is hydrolyzed by water.
Unstable except in solution.
Toxic by skin absorption. A very powerful
oxidizer and dangerous fire hazard. Skin and lower
respiratory tract irritant.
tert-Butyl chromate is expected
to cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and
skin.
Skin contact with tert-butyl chromate
caused necrosis of the skin and death of rats.1
In another report exposed rats had an increase
in respiratory rate and signs of mild narcosis.
Literature sources indicate that tert-Butyl chromate solution in carbon tetrachloride is flammable.
A very flammable
mixture. When heated to decomposition it
emits acrid and irritating fumes. See
CHROMIUM COMPOUNDS and
ESTERS.
Butyl chromate is used in specialty reactions as an organic source of chromium; in
making catalysts; and as a curing agent for urethane
foams
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for atleast 30 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seekmedical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if heart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.Medical observation is recommended for 2448 h afterbreathing overexposure, as pulmonary edema may bedelayed. As first aid for pulmonary edema, a doctor orauthorized paramedic may consider administering a corticosteroid spray.
Note to Physician: In case of fume inhalation, treat pulmonary edema. Consider administering prednisone or othercorticosteroid orally to reduce tissue response to fume.Positive-pressure ventilation may be necessary. Treat metalfume fever with bed rest, analgesics, and antipyretics.
tert-Butyl chromate is considered to be an
inferred carcinogen because it is a hexavalent
chromium compound.
Color Code—Yellow Stripe: Reactivity Hazard(strong oxidizer); Store separately in an area isolated fromflammables, combustibles, or other yellow coded materials.Color Code—Blue: Health Hazard/Poison: Store in asecure poison location. Prior to working with tert-butylchromate you should be trained on its proper handling andstorage. Before entering confined space where this chemical may be present, check to make sure that an explosiveconcentration does not exist. Store in tightly closed containers in an explosion-proof refrigerator away from incompatible materials listed above. Metal containers involvingthe transfer of this chemical should be grounded andbonded. Where possible, automatically pump liquid fromdrums or other storage containers to process containers.Drums must be equipped with self-closing valves, pressurevacuum bungs, and flame arresters. Use only nonsparkingtools and equipment, especially when opening and closingcontainers of this chemical. Sources of ignition, such assmoking and open flames, are prohibited where this chemical is used, handled, or stored in a manner that couldcreate a potential fire or explosion hazard. A regulated, marked area should be established where this chemical ishandled, used, or stored in compliance with OSHAStandard 1910.1045.

hazardous material, Technical Name Required
tert-Butyl chromate is a strong oxidizer;
reacts violently with reducing agents (such as lithium,
sodium, aluminum and their hydrides and hydrazine); combustible materials. Water solutions of tert-butyl chromate
react violently with strong bases. Incompatible with strong
acids (i.e., hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric); alcohols,
and easily oxidized materials, such as paper, wood, sulfur,
aluminum and plastics
