Nitrothal-isopropyl is commercially synthesised through esterification of 5-nitroisophthalic acid with isopropanol. The production process begins with the nitration of isophthalic acid to yield 5-nitroisophthalic acid, which is then purified and reacted with isopropanol in the presence of an acid catalyst, typically sulphuric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid, to form the diisopropyl ester. This esterification is carried out under reflux conditions to ensure complete conversion and high yield.
Non-systemic with contact action. Inhibits fungal growth but exact mode of action is unclear
