Sodium pivalate hydrate is a white to almost white powder to crystal with a faint fatty acid odour. It is a stable compound that is soluble in water; its aqueous solution is typically slightly alkaline. It is insoluble or sparingly soluble in most organic solvents, such as ethanol and diethyl ether. The substance is hygroscopic and must therefore be stored in a dry place.

Sodium trimethylacetate hydrate may be used in chemical synthesis studies.

Sodium pivalate hydrate is the monohydrate form of sodium pivalate. Sodium pivalate is used as a catalyst, a pharmaceutical intermediate and an oilfield modifier. In the pharmaceutical sector, sodium pivalate is also used as an inducer of carnitine deficiency syndrome, for research into the functional and metabolic aspects of carnitine deficiency.
