Meclocycline Sulfosalicylate Salt is a salt prepared from demeclocycline taking advantage of the basic dimethylamino group which protonates and readily forms a salt in solution with 2-hydroxy-3-carboxybenenesulphonic acid. Like all tetracyclines, meclocycline shows broad spectrum antibacterial and antiprotozoan activity and acts by binding to the 30S and 50S ribosomal sub-units, blocking protein synthesis. The unusual complex counter-ion is likely to add an antiseptic component to the use of the compound for skin infections.
Meclocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that is topically used for skin infections and irritations.
Meclan (Johnson & Johnson).
Meclocycline, 7-chloro-6-deoxy-6-demethyl-6-methylene-5-oxytetracycline sulfosalicylate (Meclan), is a semisyntheticderivative prepared from oxytetracycline.Although meclocycline has been used in Europe for manyyears, it became available only relatively recently in theUnited States for a single therapeutic indication, the treatmentof acne. It is available as the sulfosalicylate salt in a1% cream.
Meclocycline sulfosalicylate is a bright yellow, crystallinepowder that is slightly soluble in water and insolublein organic solvents. It is light sensitive and should be storedin light-resistant containers.
