Paraquat bistribromide is not manufactured through an independent synthetic pathway; it is produced by post-synthetic conversion of technical-grade paraquat into a stable crystalline bistribromide salt. Commercial producers first generate paraquat via the well established bipyridyl coupling and quaternisation process used for all paraquat salts. The resulting paraquat cation is then reacted with hydrobromic acid and elemental bromine under controlled acidic, oxidative conditions, forming the paraquat-tribromide ion pair.
