Sodium phosphide can be used as a phosphating agent to prepare phosphine and pesticides.
Red solid. Decomposes on heating and
in water, forming phosphine.
Dangerous fire risk, reacts with water and
acids to form phosphine.
Flammable when exposed to heat or flame. Reacts violentlywith water to yield phosphine. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Pox and Na2O. See also PHOSPHIDES.
Sodium phosphide can be produced by a chemical reaction between phosphorus and metallic sodium.
Sodium phosphide reacts immediately with water to produce a highly toxic and flammable gas.
