Tetraethylammonium (meta)periodate can be used as an oxidant in the N-dealkylation of tertiary amines using Fe(III) complex as a catalyst. It can also be employed as a reagent in the intramolecular cycloaddition reactions.
Tetraethylammonium Periodate is used as an oxidizing agent used for generating nitroso compounds from hydroxamic acids, N-hydroxycarbamic esters, and N-hydroxyureas.
Preparative Methods of Tetraethylammonium Periodate: a solution of periodic acid (H5IO6) (7.72 g, 0.034 mol) in water (20 mL) was added slowly to a cooled
solution of 25% tetraethylammonium hydroxide (20 mL, 0.034 mol). The resulting solution was evaporated under reduced
pressure, the solid residue was extracted with hot t-butyl alcohol, and the product was precipitated by addition of diisopropyl ether.
Recrystallization from t-butyl alcohol yielded a white solid (8.5 g, 82%).
Caution: a safety shield should be used since any
excess H5IO6 present may explode violently during concentration of the aqueous solution and extraction of the crude salt.
Tetraethylammonium (meta)periodate is stable and is best stored in a desiccator in the dark.
