ChEBI: 2,4-D choline is a quaternary ammonium salt resulting from the reaction of 2,4-D with choline. It is a post-emergence herbicide used for selective control of broadleaf weeds. It has a role as a phenoxy herbicide, a synthetic auxin and an agrochemical. It contains a (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetate.
The commercial production of 2,4-D-choline begins with purified 2,4-D acid, obtained via the standard phenoxyacetic acid route. The free acid is dissolved in water or a mixed solvent and then neutralised with choline hydroxide under controlled pH and temperature, forming the choline salt without leaving excess base or unreacted acid.
Selective, systemic, absorbed through roots and increases biosynthesis and production of ethylene causing uncontrolled cell division and so damages vascular tissue. Synthetic auxin.
