Apolipoprotein C-III (apoC-III) is central in regulating the metabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. It is an inhibitor of lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Plasma levels of apoC-III are somewhat correlated to body mass index (BMI) and insulin sensitivity, and strongly correlated to levels of VLDL triglycerides. Reduced levels of apoC-III lead to higher fatty acid uptake of plasma triglycerides into adipose tissue.
