The cytoplasmic protein encoded by N-myc downstream regulated 1 (NDRG1) gene participates in stress responses, hormone responses, cell growth and differentiation. It is necessary for p53-mediated caspase activation and apoptosis. NDRG1 is a Rab4a effector, th at participates in vesicular recycling of E-cadherin. It plays a key role in peripheral nervous system myelination. It also helps to modulate lipid fate in breast cancer cells.
