3,4-dichlorobenzyl methylcarbamate

Dichlormate was commercially produced via a carbamate esterification process. The synthesis typically involved reacting 3,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol with methyl isocyanate or methylcarbamoyl chloride under controlled conditions to form the N-methylcarbamate ester. This reaction was carried out in an organic solvent with a catalyst or base to facilitate ester formation. After completion, the crude product was purified through recrystallisation or distillation to obtain technical-grade dichlormate.

Thought to be due to inhibition of the synthesis of carotenoids and to the consequent photodestruction of chlorophyll and chloroplast disruption
