Dinoseb sodium followed the same overarching pattern used for other dinoseb salts: manufacture the parent nitrophenol, then neutralise it with the chosen base. Producers began with mixed acid nitration of 2-tert-butylphenol to introduce the 2,4-dinitro substitution pattern, followed by careful work up to remove acidic residues and stabilise the dinoseb intermediate, which is prone to oxidative darkening if impurities remain. The purified dinoseb was then treated with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate in aqueous solution, forming the sodium salt through straightforward acid-base neutralisation. Process conditions were tuned to avoid excess heat and to prevent degradation of the nitrophenolic structure, and the resulting dinoseb sodium could then be formulated.
Inhibits respiratory electron transport, and uncouples oxidative phosphorylation - membrane disruption. Selective, non-systemic. Contact action.
